College course in the USA
As part of your Au Pair stay you will also attend a college course for which you will receive 6 academic credit points. The host family will pay up to $500 of the fees and will of course give you the time you need for the course. It is important that you start the course within the first three months after your arrival, so that you also meet the requirements for au pairs. You can take the course you want. There are no regulations as to which topic the course must have. You should still check with your local coordinator to see if this course counts.
If the course costs more than $500, you must pay the rest of the cost.
Popular courses include English, American History, Other Languages, Political Science, and Social Sciences. Some au pairs attend a TOEFL preparation course in order to then write the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and thus prove the English skills they have gained. Your host family will surely help you to choose the right college.
There are also courses that you can take, but you can’t use the host family’s $500 for them. These include:
English courses in churches and libraries
driving lessons
Online courses at a university or college
Courses that are only for au pairs
Courses that only take place over a weekend
